About $3.60

Hmm… Let’s see: Scholar at heart, professor by trade. Citizen by necessity and mother by choice.

I like maps, books, and things on screens.

And, oh!, I am of medium height, brown, and have (I hope) a pleasing roundness.

What else? My site:

I read. I watch. I listen. I am mainly interested in matters of race and gender, particularly in regards to how they function in relation to knowledge production– knowledge as produced for and in public policy, in academia, and also in popular culture. They are all connected. My goal here is to bring some of the conceptual tools I use as an academic to talk about things my heart cares about– or at least enjoys.

This site is made up of what is new or interesting to me, and what I hope you will enjoy too. Sometimes serious, sometimes not. A tiny island, built up around finding meaning in the sea of public discourse.

And what should we do when looking for coherence?

Let us sing!

(from Erykah Badu’s “On & On”)

On & On and On &On
My cipher keeps movin’ like a rollin’ stone
On & On and On &On
Alright till the break of dawn
On & On and On &On
My cipher keeps movin’ like a rollin’ stone
On & On and On &On
Gotdamit I’m a sing my song

I was born under water
With 3 dollar$ & 6 dimes
Yeah, U may laugh
‘Cuz U did not do yo math
Like one, two, three
(damn, did y’all feel that?)
Like 1, 2, 3
The world keeps turnin’
Oh what a day,
What a day, what a day!

The fine print:

When you shop through the links on this site or click text ads, I earn tiny commissions, which help pay for the coffee and childcare that keep me online! So the idea is that if you were going buy a book through Amazon, why not buy it thru this site? If you were going to shop on iTunes anyway, shop from here! You get the book, music, etc. and we stay online. Yay!

All Cypher&Syllable sites only advertise goods and services that we use ourselves or discuss in our posts. (Okay, except for the eHarmony stuff. That all worked out quite well… but it looks fun!)
